Walk into any Peabody home built before 1980 and the sewer lateral is likely clay tile or cast iron; after 1980, almost certainly PVC. Each material fails differently — and the right repair depends on which you have.
Cast iron is tough and quiet, but it corrodes and scales internally. Rust scale builds up like arterial plaque, narrowing the pipe until flow chokes. Lifespan: 50–75 years, and many local lines are at or past it. Light scale can be descaled and lined; heavy corrosion needs replacement or bursting.
Smooth, root-resistant, chemically inert, with glued joints far tighter than clay bells. Lifespan: 100+ years. PVC fails mainly from bad installation — poor bedding causing bellies, or crushed pipe from construction damage — not from age.
